A) What is Ashwagandha ?
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a very potent shrub which belongs to solanaceae family.This plant is mainly grows in India, Middle East,and in some parts of Africa.It has unbranched, straight & conical root having bitter taste and smells like a horse's urine ( as said in ayurvedic text).It's fruits are globose (round) in shape and on maturity they become red in colour and they are packed in a papery pentagonal covering (this can be used to identified the plant).
The word Ashwagandha itself, describes it's properties.
Ashwagandha is a combination of two words 'ASHWA' meaning 'horse' and 'GANDHA' meaning 'smell'.Together they define the plant, as a plant having smell similiar to that of horse.
Ashwagandha is a very well known drug in ayurved text which improves the strength of the body and increases the sexual potency similar to that of horse.

Ashwagandha is used in different preparatory forms likes:-
Churna (powder)
Kalka (paste)
Kwath (decoction)
CHURNA ( POWDER)
1) Take Ashwagandha roots first clean it's dirt and then wash it with water.
2) Take a pan and add ashwagandha roots with suitable amount of milk and water in ratio 1:1 so, that roots are completely dipped.
3) Boil the roots on low flame.
4) Boil until all the water content is evaporated.
5) Pick out the roots and place them on a clean plate.
6) Leave them for drying .
7) After they are completely dry, make its powder with the help of mixer.
8) Sieve the powder through a clean cloth to get a fine powder.
9) Now powder is ready to use.
D) Doses:-
Powder :- 3-6 gm.
With:-warm milk
Normal/warm water
Honey
Paste :- local application
With the help of the powder or we can also take fresh clean root to make its Kalka(paste) and kwath (decoction) and used in different diseases like:-
Swelling (granthi) --> Ashwagandha paste (L/A)
Insomnia --> Make Ashwagandha kwath with milk + ghee
E) Indications :-
Hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis,skin disorders, asthma, diabetes
F) Side-effects :-
1) Headache
2) Disturbed digestion

1) Pregnancy
2) Breast feeding women
