A) General talk on HARIDRA (Turmeric)
HARIDRA (Curcuma longa Linn.)is a golden herb that belongs to Zingiberaceae family.
It is a 2-3 feet tall perennial herb with lanceolate leaves. Its rhizome is yellow brown in colour with its characteristic fragrance and flavour.
Haridra is mainly found in South-East Asia and in some states of India like Mumbai, Madras, Bengal.
Different aacharyas has placed haridra in different Gana's like:-
Aacharya Charaka - Kusthaghna, kandughna, Vishaghna, Tiktaskand, Shirovirechan.
Aacharya Shusrut - Haridraadi, Mustaadi, Shleshmpreshman.
1) Firstly take some fresh rhizomes and wash them with water.
2) Take a pan and add suitable amount of water so that the rhizomes are completely dipped in it.
3)Boil the rhizomes.
4) Boiling of rhizomes takes upto 30 mins - 6hours.
4) When the rhizomes are boiling add some leaves of haridra to it.
5) Take out the rhizomes and place them on a plate and flip them over from time to time for its proper drying.
6) When rhizomes dry completely then take a clean cloth and start rubbing them.
7) After rubbing, haridra rhizomes are ready for its use.

• POWDER :-
1) Take some fresh rhizomes and remove their dirt by washing them under running water.

2) Now processing of haridra rhizomes should be done.
3) After processing, break the rhizomes into small pieces.
4) Add these pieces into an imam dusta (mortar pestal) or grinder can also be used to grind these.
5) Make its powder.
6) Sieve the powder through a clean cloth to get smooth fine powder.
7) Haridra churna is ready.
1) Take few fresh rhizomes of haridra and clean them properly.
2) Chopp the rhizomes into small pieces.
3) With the help of a sil batta(grindstones) make its fine paste.
4) Haridra Kalka is ready.
• Kwath of haridra can also be prepared by following the general procedure.
Haridra is taken in combination with different drugs according to the person's illness.
E) Doses
Swarasa - 10 - 20 ml
Churna - 1 - 2 gm
- with warm milk.
Kwath - 50-100 ml
Kalka - local application( in a form of lepa)
F) Indications
• Churna - Diabetes, cold & cough, skin disorders (allergy and itching), worm infestation, asthma, ear related problems.
• Kwath - Leukaemia, yoniroga, eye related problems, itching, pimples.
• Kalka - swelling, itching, skin complexion, edema, wounds.
